This is a miniature railway line (0.60 m wide) which leaves the city of Volos and goes to Milies (total distance: 28 Km.) with stops at the most important villages and many sights (bridges, tunnels, bastions etc.) to see along the way.
The construction of the railway started in 1881. The first part (Volos-Lechonia) was opened to the public in 1896 and the rest (Lechonia-Milies) in 1903. The engineer in charge of the works was the Italian Ernesto de Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico. The train ceased operation in 1971.
In 1985 some efforts were made so that the train can be operational again. The train needed repairing, the railway needed maintenance and some buildings had to be constructed. Also, in 1985 the train was declared a preserved historical monument.
Nowadays, the train goes from Ano Lechonia to Milies every Saturday and Sunday (except for Easter Sunday) from April until October.
